The New Yorker magazine covers in tablet mockups

Magazine Covers:

New Yorker Food Illustrations

I think one of the most compelling aspects of food is its texture and color. For these New Yorker cover designs, I wanted to capture and emphasize the texture and color of food by taking a painterly and limited color palette approach. I also made the food larger than life by playing with scale and adding a background scene. I think this approach helped convey the emotions and moods that particular certain food can have. By making the ingredient  the focus of the piece, I’m celebrating their unique flavors, textures, and unconsidered attributes.

The first cover is made for Oaxaca, Mexico, and features fungal corn. I used purples and yellows for the design. I also made it purple because this specific type of corn is known for its dark, gritty texture.

The second cover is based on the Singapore Sling a popular drink from Singapore. The drink is distinct for its bright pink and red colors so I used shades of pink throughout the illustration.

The last cover features the Coussin de Lyon, which translates to cushion from Lyon. I used light blues because the French dessert is typically made with bright colors.

Magazine Article Illustrations:

New Yorker Articles

I made illustrations for three different New Yorker articles. Each drawing conveys the main theme of the article. The first article focuses on how income inequality contributes to water quality. The illustration shows a young girl in an empty, dirty glass to show the lack and quality of water. The second article is about conserving energy. My art direction shows how office products can harm the environment by turning them into polluting buildings. The third article is about the passing of a famous displaced refugee. The illustration depicts a small shrine on the bench Mr. Nasseri frequently slept on.
